Tongeren, the oldest town in Belgium and a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network, has recently awarded Indal with the innovative project of designing and implementing the lighting for the city’s basilica. Tongeren has an extremely rich culture and historic background, as the city is covered with ancient monuments that add to its charm and beauty.
In the town square alone stand the statue of Ambriorix, the Town Hall and, what is considered by many the city’s most extraordinary monument, the Basilica of Our Lady. Listed as UNESCO World Heritage, the basilica’s gothic tower stands over the city, demonstrating its unrivaled beauty. The authorities of Tongeren decided to embark upon a lighting project which would accentuate the ancient monuments of the city and thus a ‘Light Council’, consisting of a group of citizens, was formed. This council, with the suppport of the municipality, asked several lighting manufacturers to study the project and present their proposals for creating lighting for three monuments in the city: the Basilica, the statue of Ambiorix and the Town Hall.
Lighting project and solutions by Indal Belgium
The ‘Light Council’ studied all the proposals presented, taking into account numerous factors including design, innovation, creativity, vision and performance, and, after several months of deliberation they chose Trilux to carry out the project of the lighting of the Town Hall and the statue, whereas Indal was given the priviledge of focussing on the masterpiece that is the Basilica. Thus, bearing in mind the importance of the assignment, Indal carefully selected a number of different sized products from the Inled range, as well as projectors Mario IZR, Sirius IZS, Zeus IZX and T-Lines. The installer specialist MAES Industrïele Verlichting provided their services for the project and the result is outstanding. Phase II of the project will begin soon, and it will be the main streets and the medieval walls that will be the focus of this stage. The products that Indal have carefully selected for these landmarks in Phase II are Ocean System Plus and for the Moeren Gate, which dates from 1379 and still remains intact, will be lit by Stela’s.
